WHY SUPPORT BSSC?

Why Support the barrie speed skating club

The Barrie Speed Skating Club is an organization in your community committed to the Olympic sport of speed skating and provides the opportunity for amateur skaters to represent the City of Barrie and the surrounding areas on multiple levels.

Your contributions would help BSSC to further develop skaters from the grassroots level to the competitive level and perhaps one day the Olympic level.

Learn more about our club development and progress below.

Grassroots development

Our club provides opportunity for youth to be exposed to the exciting, fast paced sport of short track speed skating. All skaters are provided with a safe and fun introduction to the sport through drills, games and races. BSSC values and promotes community and a love of life long fitness.

More Than a Club — A Family

BSSC takes pride in being more than just a club; we are a close-knit community that feels like family. Our small club environment allows skaters, coaches, and families to build strong connections, support one another, and celebrate each achievement together. From first-time skaters learning the basics to athletes competing at higher levels, every member is encouraged, valued, and welcomed. This sense of belonging and teamwork is at the heart of what makes BSSC such a positive and rewarding place to grow both on and off the ice.

Small but mighty

Where our club lacks in size, we make up for it with success. BSSC has achieved outstanding success on both the Provincial Elite Circuit and the Provincial Regional Circuit. Each year, BSSC skaters have earned the opportunity to represent Team Ontario at the Canada East Championships. Many of our skaters have also qualified for and competed in the Ontario Winter Games, most recently at the 2026 Games in Orillia.

REaching For More

Many BSSC skaters have continued their speed skating journeys beyond Barrie, advancing to senior-level competition and achieving success at higher levels of the sport. From relocating to Calgary to train at the Olympic Oval, to competing at the Canada Winter Games and representing Canada at the Special Olympics, these athletes all began their careers at the grassroots level with BSSC.

Today, two former BSSC skaters, Melle van 't Wout and Jens van 't Wout, who started their speed skating journeys with the club before returning to the Netherlands, now compete and represent the Netherlands on the world stage.
